create a custom character with Affinity Designer2 – template download& preparation

In this article, you will learn how to make a custom character’s body with Affinity Designer2 and CTA5.

First, please download the human template through :

https://www.reallusion.com/cartoon-animator/custom-2d-character.html

Import the file “Human with Sprite Hand-affinity”to Affinity Designer 2.

Please follow the file settings as above.

After Export, launch CTA5 > and click ‘’create Character‘’


Sprite Replacement

In Affinity Designer 2, When dealing with multiple components, it is important to group them.

Once you have grouped the elements, you can use the Artboard tool to crop the artwork to the desired size.

Finally, you can export the artwork using the same tool.

When exporting, please note to do this:

1. Perform Export… > SVG.

2. Set Preset: to its default: ‘SVG(digital – small size)’.

3. Set Raster DPI: to 72.

If Preset and Raster DPI are not set properly, errors may occur in CTA.

Next, please return to CTA and use “Replace Current Element” to replace the SVG file that was just exported.

Your result must be like this:

For other components, please follow the steps above.

Make sure that every template component in the Sprite Editor has replaced the image; all of these components must be replaced!

Finally, the character will look like this.


Adjusting Skeletons

Open the Bone Editor.

Select the pivot to adjust the pivot position.

Animation Testing

Return to Stage Mode.

In Template > Free Resource > Animation, find the template animation.

Drag the animation from the Smart Content Manager onto the character.

If the testing process is successful, then the body is considered complete.
